Tamalpais Celebrates Fire & Police Heroes

Fiiremen & Police Officers It's been a tradition at The Tamalpais to recognize local fire, paramedic and fire department professionals for their efforts, but the gesture is never taken for granted.

Twin Cities Police Captain, Mike McDuffee received gifts totaling $3,000 for their fire, paramedic and police agencies from The Tamalpais Retirement Community in Greenbrae. Resident Council President Judge Roy Wonder presented the checks at a town hall meeting on June 19 The Tamalpais.

“In what has become an annual tradition, this $3,000 donation is a small gesture of appreciation for the fire, paramedic, and police professionals who ensure enjoyable lives for those of us living at The Tamalpais,” said Judge Wonder.

Deputy Fire Engineer Coleman said the funds will go to acquire traffic light preemptive devices that allow fire trucks and emergency vehicles to avoid potentially life threatening traffic delays on the area’s busy streets.

Twin Cities Police Captain McDuffee  is earmarking the funds for the Twin Cities’ Explorer program, which allows high school students aspiring to join law enforcement a chance to receive hands-on training  in all aspects of police work and officer safety.

The Tamalpais, Marin’s only accredited Life Care community is home to 330 residents. This year, the community celebrated its 37-year anniversary, having opened in June of 1969.

The community also has assisted living and skilled nursing services. It was named one of the top twenty retirement communities in the nation by New Choices Magazine, a Reader’s Digest publication from 1994-7 and was named one of the top continuing care retirement communities in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine in 1996.

“They offer a true sense of security,” said Nancy Martin, Marketing Director at The Tamalpais. “It’s obvious that everyone here is appreciative of what they do. There’s a lot of gratitude.”

Martin said that the police, fire and emergency teams are always quick to respond to calls and offer a level of professionalism and compassion that routinely makes residents at The Tamalpais, and everywhere in the community, feel lucky to have them around.

Larkspur Senior Citizens of the Year: Mark and Bea Brown

Roosevelt's Yacht Mark and Bea Brown have mobilized The Tamalpais. The 300 residents of the retirement community are kept in the loop of local events and happenings through the Browns’ sheer will. Bea’s experience with the local League of Women Voters chapter has put her in the position of knowing what important facts her neighbors need to know. Mark used all of his years of experience in the Los Altos community to lend a hand in many local issues. The pair, with their combined expertise and unwavering enthusiasm, have ensured that there has been an open channel of communication between the town and their neighbors at The Tamalpais. When they got the call about the award, Mark admits that their response was, “Oh, come on!” But their tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. As Bea says, “We try to keep people up-to-date about global issues.”
